It\u2019s still seen as a disappointment<\/span>      <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcjm4ggy00063b6m74l1ikny@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Wegovy, the GLP-1 medication to treat obesity from Lilly competitor Novo Nordisk, will still be covered under plans managed by CVS Caremark, along with a few other<strong> <\/strong>medications that are generally less effective.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcjm84my00003b6myjfh22nu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            CVS says the decision to cover Wegovy and exclude Zepbound is \u201cforcing the drug manufacturers to compete with one another\u201d and will encourage both Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk to lower prices for their products in the US.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcjmapqr00023b6mmyoaobtx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe egregiously high list prices set by drug manufacturers of GLP-1s for weight loss are the single biggest barrier to patient access,\u201d CVS Health said in a statement. \u201cOur formulary strategy maintains clinically appropriate coverage while using competition to drive lower costs.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcjnjq5z00023b6m62zzv9ot@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But pharmacy benefit managers \u2013 of which CVS Caremark is one of the largest \u2013 have faced scrutiny for their role in rising drug costs in the US.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmckj9kvl00033b6mf76dsj4c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The coverage change applies to CVS Caremark\u2019s most common formulary template, which represents between 25 and 30 million individuals overall. When the choice was available, the subset of members who take weight-loss drugs chose Wegovy and Zepbound at roughly equivalent levels, CVS Health said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcjm4ggy00083b6m565c4mer@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When it comes to weight loss, providers and patients argue that GLP-1 medications are not a one-for-one swap and that volatile insurance coverage contradicts the science and experience of people managing obesity as a chronic disease.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcjm4ggy00093b6md2lovetc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cLargely across society, we don\u2019t accept obesity as a long-term chronic disease, and we\u2019re still looking for quick fixes and quick solutions where that\u2019s not the reality of the biology and disease process. The mindsets have not caught up with the science yet,\u201d said Dr. Tracy Zvenyach, director of policy strategy and alliances at the Obesity Action Coalition, a nonprofit advocacy group.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcjn8wq2000b3b6mg8pt9iow@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIf decision-makers do not understand obesity to be a long-term chronic disease, that\u2019s when we see these exclusionary policies or these very, very cumbersome utilization management practices that really just set up one barrier after another to prevent people from getting the care that they need. It\u2019s unacceptable. We don\u2019t do that with other chronic diseases.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader-elevate vossi-subheader vossi-subheader--size-h2\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmcjmxsf600033b6mvi0xcovh@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"the-trial-and-error-system\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        The trial-and-error system<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcjm4ggy000a3b6mgnxf0ild@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It takes time to develop a treatment plan with GLP-1 drugs that works with each individual patient, said Dr. Jody Dushay, an endocrinologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. Some people might have an allergic reaction at the injection site for one medication or have worse side effects \u2013 such as severe constipation, nausea or stomach pain \u2013 with one than another.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcjm4ggy000b3b6mfwsco5rt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Adapting to a change in medication will often interrupt a patient\u2019s weight-loss trajectory, she said, and the trial-and-error could create a lot of waste for medications that were in shortage not long ago.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcjm4ggy000c3b6mepkbaua0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAs soon as these announcements [about insurance coverage changes] come out, I get flooded with messages from patients,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s very stressful for patients who have been doing really well, who are having good tolerance and feel like they have hit their stride in terms of medication, nutrition and exercise. For me, it\u2019s unprecedented in terms of how much insurance matters for the clinical care that I\u2019m providing and the choices that I have,\u201d she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcjm4ggy000f3b6mic32cy78@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            And discussing strategies to manage insurance-mandated changes in treatment infringes on clinical care.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcjm4ggy000g3b6m8v9qpis3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThere is barely time to ask the patient how they are feeling, about side effects and weight loss and general health updates,\u201d Dushay said. \u201cThere is a loss of time for patient care and a huge increase in time burden outside the visit for doctors and pharmacists.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcjm4ggy000h3b6m7ygqo3sk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Another major insurance change coming next year will affect another large swath of Dushay\u2019s patients: In January, BCBS Massachusetts will be excluding all GLP-1s from coverage for treatment of obesity, reserving coverage for these drugs only when indicated to treat type 2 diabetes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcjm4ggy000i3b6mq6codtov@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe nation is facing an obesity crisis.
