data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Trump administration has declared that it will aggressively combat chronic disease in America.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrua00063b6m951go02z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Yet in its feverish purge of federal health programs, it has proposed eliminating the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion and its annual funding of $1.4 billion.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrua00073b6mx8b4qhmi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            That\u2019s one of many disconnects between what the administration says about health \u2014 notably, in the \u201cMAHA Report\u201d that President Donald Trump recently presented at the White House \u2014 and what it\u2019s actually doing, scientists and public health advocates say.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrua00083b6mckung8j8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Among other contradictions:    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/list\/instances\/cmcfcdsfb001o3b6mh2t6ugc7@published\" class=\"list-elevate vossi-list\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<ul data-editable=\"items\" class=\"list__items list__items--ul\">\n<li data-editable=\"items.0.text\" class=\"list__item vossi-list__item inline-placeholder\">        <span class=\"list__text\">            The report says more research is needed on health-related topics such as chronic diseases and the cumulative effects of chemicals in the environment. But the Trump administration\u2019s mass cancellation of federal research grants to scientists at universities, including Harvard, has derailed studies on those subjects.        <\/span>      <\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.1.text\" class=\"list__item vossi-list__item inline-placeholder\">        <span class=\"list__text\">            The report denounces industry-funded research on chemicals and health as widespread and unreliable. But the administration is seeking to cut government funding that could serve as a counterweight.        <\/span>      <\/li>\n<li data-editable=\"items.2.text\" class=\"list__item vossi-list__item inline-placeholder\">        <span class=\"list__text\">            The report calls for \u201cfearless gold-standard science.\u201d But the administration has sowed widespread fear in the scientific world that it is out to stifle or skew research that challenges its desired conclusions.        <\/span>      <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrua00093b6m6vuph9sy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThere are many inconsistencies between rhetoric and action,\u201d said Alonzo Plough, chief science officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, a philanthropy focused on health.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrua000a3b6m6v96lrrm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The report, a cornerstone of President Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cMake America Healthy Again\u201d agenda, was issued by a commission that includes Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and other top administration officials.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrua000b3b6m3awkuuv6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            News organizations found that it footnoted nonexistent sources and contained signs that it was produced with help from artificial intelligence. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described the problems as \u201cformatting issues,\u201d and the administration revised the report.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrua000c3b6mc24g1rut@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Trump ordered the report to assess causes of a \u201cchildhood chronic disease crisis.\u201d His commission is now working on a plan of action.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrua000d3b6mvu2j3ym7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Spokespeople for the White House and Department of Health and Human Services did not respond to questions for this article.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader-elevate vossi-subheader vossi-subheader--size-h2\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmcfcelgn001y3b6mrimrb02y@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"studies-derailed\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Studies derailed<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrua000f3b6mnvsh114a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The MAHA report says environmental chemicals may pose risks to children\u2019s health. Citing the National Institutes of Health, it said there\u2019s a \u201cneed for continued studies from the public and private sectors, especially the NIH, to better understand the cumulative load of multiple exposures and how it may impact children\u2019s health.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrua000g3b6m9xi45pgo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Meanwhile, the administration has cut funding for related studies.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrua000h3b6mr0t9wb50@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For example, in 2020 the Environmental Protection Agency asked scientists to propose ways of researching children\u2019s exposure to chemicals from soil and dust. It said that, for kids ages 6 months to 6 years, ingesting particulates \u2014 by putting their hands on the ground or floor then in their mouths \u2014 could be a significant means of exposure to contaminants such as herbicides, pesticides, and a group of chemicals known as PFAS.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrua000i3b6m7ldsbnh2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            One of the grants \u2014 for almost $1.4 million over several years \u2014 went to a team of scientists at Johns Hopkins University and the University of California-San Francisco. Researchers gained permission to collect samples from people\u2019s homes, including dust and diapers.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrua000j3b6mauy1piwe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But, beyond a small test run, they didn\u2019t get to analyze the urine and stool samples because the grant was terminated this spring, said study leader Keeve Nachman, a professor of environmental health and engineering at Hopkins.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrua000k3b6mtivt435s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe objectives of the award are no longer consistent with EPA funding priorities,\u201d the agency said in a May 10 termination notice.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrua000l3b6mrmo1s0b8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Another EPA solicitation from 2020 addressed many of the issues the MAHA report highlighted: cumulative exposures to chemicals and developmental problems such as attention-deficit\/hyperactivity disorder, obesity, anxiety, and depression. One of the resulting grants funded the Center for Early Life Exposures and Neurotoxicity at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. That grant was ended weeks early in May, said the center\u2019s director, Stephanie Engel, a UNC professor of epidemiology.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrub000m3b6mw492p729@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In a statement, EPA press secretary Brigit Hirsch said the agency \u201cis continuing to invest in research and labs to advance the mission of protecting human health and the environment.\u201d Due to an agency reorganization, \u201cthe way these grants are administered will be different going forward,\u201d said Hirsch, who did not otherwise answer questions about specific grants.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrub000n3b6m9kl8t9ug@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In its battle with Harvard, the Trump administration has stopped paying for research the NIH had commissioned on topics such as how autism might be related to paternal exposure to air pollution.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrub000o3b6mxnvsv9i5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The loss of millions of dollars of NIH funding has also undermined data-gathering for long-term research on chronic diseases, Harvard researchers said. The information could retrospectively reveal exposures before people were born \u2014 when they were still in utero \u2014 and exposures their parents experienced before they were conceived.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrub000r3b6mhlag6iii@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Harvard expected that some of the grants wouldn\u2019t be renewed, but the Trump administration brought ongoing funding to an abrupt end, said Walter Willett, a professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Chan school.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrub000s3b6m9u10ngzy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As a result, researchers are scrambling to find money to keep following more than 200,000 people who enrolled in studies beginning in the 1980s \u2014 including children of participants who are now adults themselves \u2014 and to preserve about 2 million samples, Willett said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrub000t3b6ml1nks8j9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cSo now our ability to do exactly what the administration wants to do is jeopardized,\u201d said Jorge Chavarro, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Chan school. \u201cAnd there\u2019s not an equivalent resource. It\u2019s not like you can magically recreate these resources without having to wait 20 or 30 years to be able to answer the questions\u201d that the Trump administration \u201cwants answered now.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcfcdrub000u3b6m5ujx6luh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Over the past few months, the administration has fired or pushed out almost 5,000 NIH employees, blocked almost $3 billion in grant funding from being awarded, and terminated almost 2,500 grants totaling almost $5 billion, said Sen. data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s just simple math that if you devastate governmental funding by tens of billions of dollars, then the percentage of industry funding dollars
